When I was about 17 years old I remember going to my younger sister’s track event. She was a sprinter! I still remember the feeling that came over me as I watched her prepare for her race. She walked, jumped, ran a little and practiced getting into starting position. She was wearing the coolest running shorts and top and I remember admiring her strong legs. She looked ready! She looked powerful! The look on her face told me she was there to win!. Man I wanted to look and feel like that.
I think I was wearing long brown polyester pants at the time. Hiding what I think was wrong with me on the outside but really trying to conceal all the hurt I was feeling on the inside. Even then I knew I was made out of the same stuff my amazing sister demonstrated that day. I just couldn’t find it…well not yet anyways.
Cut to 25 years later and I was still tormented by these same thoughts. But now married with 4 children. Carrying a lot more weight, both body and mind in pain. But on this day 25 years later something inside of me said…”Enough! Enough of all of this! I’m not doing this one day more!” And that was the absolute truth.
On that day I vowed to do whatever it took to change my life for good. Not for a day, not for a month, not for a year…but for a life. I wanted to run, to feel free of pain both body and soul. I wanted to change my attitude about food and my behaviors surrounding eating and nutrition. I wanted real Change. It took me a full year to make it happen. But Change did come!
Since that big change in 2009 I found out that I WAS made out of the same stuff my younger sister was! I made my legs strong…I ran some races. I’ve run with my grand children. I’ve stood on some competitive bodybuilding stages and taken home some trophies. But most importantly I learned that when you change your mind you have the ability to change your life. And THAT CHANGE is absolutely possible!
