Recently my daughter Sarah and her family moved…unfortunately. Man, we miss them living down the road. But the trek to see them is not far away, so we high-tail it over there as often as we can.
On our first visit, while Sarah was driving us around the winding country roads she commented with slight exasperation, “Man, it takes forever to get somewhere!”
She is absolutely right.
Getting anywhere meaningful or wonderful usually does take time. But I think the drive is absolutely worth it.
In fact, in the end, the drive might end up being more meaningful than the actual destination.
Usually, I have begun the pursuit of change with a lofty goal in mind.
The first time I went to a bodybuilding show and gazed in awe at the athlete’s shredded physiques, I began to dream. I remember distinctly mouthing the words… “I want that!” I could see myself walking that same stage, tanned, and shredded like a lean beast showing the world what I had spent hours and hours in the gym working for. I was going to make it happen.
It did happen. Three years later. When my coach said I was ready.
And I learned rather quickly that it wasn’t just about what I would do in the gym. In fact, that was only a very small portion that determined my success.
In my pursuit of my goal the drive consisted of…ok hang on…
Learning more about nutrition
Tracking food every couple of hours
Getting in all my water
When and what cardio to do
Posing
Swimsuit attire for stage
Learning to walk the stage in 5-inch heels
Sleeping
Mental fortitude
A no give up attitude
Courage!
Hair…Jewelry…Tanning…Makeup
And finally, after ALL of that, I reached my destination…SHOW DAY!
If you are still reading this, you have a no give up kind of attitude as well…thank you for that!
Now don’t get me wrong, that first time standing on an actual stage was surreal. I could not believe what I had done. But that’s when it hit me…the long, long drive!
All that I had learned, gained and changed. I was a new person. A better athlete. Now I could say I was an actual bodybuilding competitor.
That folks, is all about the drive.
I know you want stuff. I want it too. But you can’t skip the drive.
The drive is how you get there. Yes, it may take “forever” but look at what you are going to experience!
Some of the drive might be beautiful vistas and sunsets and others long desert roads and potholes…but all along the drive you are going to learn something you will forever take with you. Something you have earned because no matter the road, you kept on driving!
And truthfully what you learn and earn makes YOUR destination that much sweeter and glorious!
You might even say,
“I deserve to stand here gosh darn it…I earned it on that big ol’ drive. And I am here baby…I AM HERE!”

Change it up:
Next time you set a lofty goal remind yourself the drive may be long.
So, in order to keep positive and moving forward, break your “drive” up into very small increments. Distances you can and will actually make. And as you move along your path remember to take a good look at all the scenic places you are discovering and learning about. And before you know it…you will be standing at your destination!

I love the drive. I’m an artist and people don’t realize how long and how much work and practice it took me to paint like I do now. But at the ripe old age of 78. I’m still doing the drive. There is more to learn, more I want to do and explore. So I keep driving!
